The last game, Medieval 2: Total War was, as the name suggests set in medieval times, where as this one is set from 1700 – 1800. Like the previous games, gameplay involves a mix of real time strategy to decide battles, and turn based play on campaign map.

Amongst the improvements made are a better auto management and advice system. The diplomatic and military AI ahas also been unified to provide more realistic diplomatic relations. Movement will also be no longer restricted to tiles, with it now being free form and religion no longer plays a very significant role, as it did in Medieval 2: Total War. Out of the 50 factions in the game, you will be able to play as 12, which include:

- Kingdom of Great Britain
- Swedish flag Swedish Empire
- Prussian flag Kingdom of Prussia
- Kingdom of Spain
- Kingdom of France
