Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

POSTED BY War Chief on Aug 16 under First Person Shooter

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (often shortened to COD6, or Modern Warfare 2) is a first person shooter game, the direct sequel of Call of Duty 4 (Modern Warfare). It is available for both the Xbox360 and PlayStation 3 platforms, as well as the PC, and has broken the record for being the biggest entertainment launch of all time, earning over $550 million, and this is shown in its massively populated online play, for which the game is famous.

The single player section of Modern Warfare 2 follows on from the original Modern Warfare (Call of Duty 4) and is set 5 years afterwards. It starts with a couple simple unrelated Afghanistan tutorial missions, but quickly  moves deep into the action with the most controversial mission of all time, No Russian (killing innocent Russian civilians at an airport for an undercover terrorist attack). From there, the campaign action quickly increases through the rest of the missions to make an amazing blur of action filled game play with twists and turns, before ending on a cliff-hanger ending.

The only valid complaint about the single player is its dire length, which can be anywhere from 2-6 hours based on how much you fail the missions, which creates need for more. However, a second batch of non-story related missions is available, with a much longer play time, and, with co-op mode enabled, through either split screen system link or online (through either Xbox Live, or PlayStation Network). This mode is extremely fun, with some challenging missions, all based around campaign maps, such as racing snowmobiles, stealth missions and wave defence missions and makes up for the campaigns short length and low replay value.
Finally, we move onto the main and most important section, the multiplayer. The multiplayer mode on recent Call of Duty  games has been widely acclaimed by players, and creates a large portion of the replay value of the game, as it provides extremely fun first person shooter game play, with an extremely well designed role playing game levelling system, to create an addictive online experience.
When you start playing the multiplayer mode, you have access to just 3 pre built classes, and as you level up by killing enemies and doing experience challenges (such as killing 5 enemy players while crouched) you unlock the ability to create your own classes, and unlock better guns to better customize those classes, as well as kill streak rewards, which will give you a special weapon to use when you reach a certain amount of kills in a row (such as 5 kills in a row rewarding your with a remote controlled missile fired from above) This system is famed for the innovative “prestige system” where when you reach the maximum level (70) you have the option to start again at level one on the next prestige to show your skills by proving you can do it all again.

Game play: 9.5
Story: 8
Replay Value: 10
Overall: 9.5/10

In conclusion, Modern Warfare 2 is an excellent game, which fans of the Call of Duty series will definitely enjoy, and I would recommend anyone outside of the fan base of Call of Duty also give it a go, as it a great game for online play.

Age of Empires III (PC) Review

Age of Empires III (PC)

Developer: Ensemble Studios

Difficulty: Easy – Medium

Gameplay: 9/10

Graphics: 8/10

Replay value: 8/10

The Age of Empire name is a long series in the real time strategy realm. With the introduction of Age of Empires 3, players are forwarded several hundred years into the future since the last game by replacing old units like catapults and swordsman for cannons and musketeers.

The game is set in the colonial age with the situation involving conflicts between the many European powers trying to take hold of the New world which is North and South America. The 8 powers struggling for control are the English, French, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, Germans, Portuguese and Ottomans with each faction having differences in its way of economy and military. Though they are very different upon closer inspection, in combat however they share many traits that are the same like buildings and units.

The single player campaign is rich with action and relatively long divided up into 3 sections with each “act” a generation apart. Aside from the campaign, there is the play over a network mode to compete against others to build rank and chat, a skirmish mode which pits you against computer AI with 5 levels of difficulty and the map editor to create your own maps and scenarios. There’s also a history section to get in depth detail about each unit, culture, building and weapons.

The interface of the game is similar to those in the Command and Conquer series and Warcraft games with the bars on the bottom for controlling and commanding. The troops form ranks automatically with the obvious melee troops like infantry in front and long ranged attackers like artillery in the rear. This can be a bit of a drag because when moving together, they move at the speed of the slowest attacker which if you have cannons and mortar in the back, the rest of your men will follow that pace as well.

A neat feature in the game is the presence of your home city which acts as your true headquarters looking after your growing colony. In the campaign and multiplayer, you can shift back to your home city at anytime to send more men, resources, workers or just upgrade and polish units that are already available though many are exhausted after one use. Your city also will gain experience and with it, gain higher tiered upgrades for shipments.

The gameplay is fairly direct with typically players advancing through the 5 ages before launching and attack or launching it deep in the ages. A set back however is how choppy it can get when all forces collide in battle, even on good gaming rigs. So while having the best assault force is a key to winning, a good machine churning out steady frame rates is also very important. Another drag to this game is that the match only ends when the enemy’s units are all dead. It’s pretty pointless since it would have made a lot more sense to end the game when all buildings are lost especially since that hastens the pace of the game.

Those who enjoy the medieval type gameplay in RTS’s will enjoy AOE 3 and also those who are just looking for a complex game with great looks and feel.

8.5/10

Machines at War PC Game Review

POSTED BY War Chief on Oct 13 under Reviews

By Ivan A Cuxeva

War games is one of the most popular PC game genres due to the fact that players like blowing things up, this behavior is seen not only in war games but in RPGs and shooting games which incorporate weapons. There have been great games that incorporate all of these elements in one nice package such as Battlefield 1942, this game has been released in several formats, one of them being PC.

Another great PC game which deals with war and strategy is called “Machines at War”, this entertaining real time strategy game allows a player to control an army of forces across a battlefield, compared to other games which claim that an army of 10-15 tanks, Machines at War takes this statement to a whole new level by adding hundreds of these machines which will literally fill your screen.

The main goal of the game is to construct the ultimate machine which will allow your forces to take over the world, however this won’t be easy and you’ll need to take down several enemy troops to accomplish this task.  This game is quite unique because it features a random map system which makes every mission different and the challenges change according to the new arrangement.

Machines at War players will often find themselves building defenses such as walls to defend their position, building bridges to cross fields which are divided by water and even hiding under the trees in order to execute an ambush attack, if you have played other war games then you know the drill; you basically need to use every trick on the book to stay alive and give your army forces a good shot at victory.

There are several strategies you can follow in order to win the game, however not all of them work perfectly, you can choose to build up your offensive forces in order to crush your enemies with unique weapons, this would make your your troops virtually unstoppable, if you are one of those players who thinks that the best defense is a good offense then you will definitively use this strategy to your advantage; another strategy you may use is to strengthen your defenses by building fortified walls and gates to shield you from any attack while you come up with a good plan to crush the enemy.

Machines at War players are able to build vehicles and aircraft in order to take complete control of the field and airspace, some of the vehicles and aircraft that can be built include: trucks, tanks, helicopters, jets, etc.  The game also features full scale maps which let the player have a clear view of the terrain and how the units are organized, overall this is a very solid game which should keep you busy for several weeks!
